The Hunger Games Catching Fire: Opening Scene Analysis

Characters:
The two main characters in this scene are Katness (Jenifer Lawence) and Gale (Liam Hemesworth).

Setting:
This scene is set in the forest just outside District 12. It is early morning just before sunrise and Katness is kneeling down looking out onto a lake as she hears a noise coming from behind her she quickly turns bow at the ready but is relieved when she sees Gale. The mood of this scene is both tense and relaxed. This is because of what Katness went through when she took part in the games a few months previous but when she sees Gale he seems to be able to keep her calm and related.

Mise en Scene:
The Mise en Scene of this scene features low lighting. This scene was shot outdoors in the early hours of the morning thus giving the result of natural lighting. To break the colours the sun is a medium/light shade of orange. The costumes that both actors are wearing are dark in colour. In this scene Katness wears a long sleeved shirt and a woolly pullover with a long pants and dark boots. Gale is also wearing a long sleeved shirt with a brown jacket and a dark coloured pants and shoes.  This gives the idea to the viewer that both characters are poor. The fact that the characters are hunting for food in this scene also suggest that they are poor.

Camera Work:
The scene opens with the camera moving in closer and then moving to a higher position showing the forest. This shot initially portrays the setting to the viewer. When the back Katness comes into view, the camera immediately shoots to a side view of the actress catching her facial expression. After a couple of seconds it transitions in to an over the shoulder shot when Gale comes in to view. The camera now switches between both characters for close up shots as they are having a conversation. In these shots the camera is closer to Katness than it is to Gale. It now cuts to a cut in shot of a Katness holding a dead rabbit from a low angle. The camera then cuts to a wide shot showing Katness and Gale as they walk. Continuing from this the camera slowly moves into a close up of Katness before cutting to a POV shot and then back to a close up of Katness.

Music & Audio:
Music and audio is used throughout this scene. Music is used at the very beginning when the setting is being established. The music that is used in this scene help sets the tone and mood of the scene. It portrays a feeling of calm and peacefulness. The audio that is used in this scene also helps set the location in the way that the viewer not only can see a river but can hear the running water. If the view was not to hear a twig snap when gale approached they would not know what was happening and why Katness reacted the way that she did.
